With recent changes to online sales tax laws in Illinois companies are starting to notify their users, Sony Playstation being one of them. Microsoft started charging sales tax on online purchases (except virtual currency) during previous console generations which came as no surprise to their userbase whom have deemed it "Micro$oft." The taxes are said to begin on October 1st, 2019.
Below is the email Sony sent out:
"Hello [user],
We are writing to inform you that PlayStation™Store will start collecting sales tax in your state on all digital goods (except virtual currency) starting October 1st, 2019. The sales tax charged on each order is determined by your state, county and city tax rates.
